FMLA: Understanding and Administering the Family and Medical Leave Act
Speakers:
- George A. Rioux, District Director, U.S. Department of Labor, Wage and Hour Division
- Teri Weber, Partner, Spring Consulting Group
Since its inception in 1993, the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA)
has provided employers with much to consider. Deceptively simple in
appearance, many benefit practitioners have come to realize that
FMLA can be surprisingly complex to administer. In this program we
will review FMLA basics and the intricacies of compliance. Plus, we will
discuss practical considerations to assist employers with day-to-day
FMLA administration. Participants are encouraged to bring questions
affecting their own organizations. Covered topics will include:
- FMLA overview on the intent of the law, coverage, eligibility, serious health conditions, employee and employer obligations, prohibited acts, twelve month period, and remedies
- Common FMLA employer mistakes
- The DOL's most frequent issues and complaints
- How the DOL enforces and administers this statute
- Insourcing vs. outsourcing options
- Links with Short Term Disability and Workers' Compensation
- Practical compliance tools to assist with forms, key employees, spousal sharing of time and other FMLA struggles
